A Special Tribute To A Great Designer Who Helped Change The History Of The World
Only rencently has the real full test fight specification achievements of the Spitfire been published, (see Wikipedia for ref. details)
Back in February 1952 a dramatic high altitude, high speed RAF test flight took place off the coast of Hong Kong, high above the South China Sea when a Spitfire 19 from No. 81 Squadron piloted by Flight Lieutenant Ted Bowels reached a record altitude of 51,550 feet above sea level, this is close to the height where Concorde used to fly at twice the speed of sound on it's Trans-Atlantic route. This Spitfire went into a verticle dive & achieved a transonic recorded speed of 690mph (1.110 km/h Mach 0.96, at such high altitude this Spitfire came very close to going through the sound barrier, this is still a piston engine speed record to this day. It has been said that no other propeller driven aircraft from WW2 or to this day could get anywhere close to matching this great engineering achievement and this is why I am paying this special tribute to it's designer R. J Mitchell as his beautiful creation together with the famous few helped to alter the course of history and allow us to enjoy the peace & security of our green & pleasant land today.
When you consider that your modern 737 Jet Airliner cruises at only 550 mph, the Spifires achievement was truly beyond all the expectations of it's brilliant designer R.J. Mitchell
R.J. Mitchell, truly the most gifted aircraft designer of all time
MH434 just has to be the most famous Spitfire in the world having appeared in so many classic war films. I was fortunate enough to meet it's pilot, the legendary Ray Hanna who has been flying this beautiful Mk9 Spitfire for the last 40 years, sadly both Ray Hanna & his son Mark Hanna are no longer with us but MH434 lives on. The link below is a tribute to both father & son as many of us have witnessed over the years their great ability and very gifted flying skills to show just what the Spifire was designed to do. The link below shows the late Mark Hanna flying Spitfire Mk9 MH434. I sure that you will agree that this represents British engineering at it's very best !

If you are lucky enough to get a chance to see the Spirit of Kent Mk. 9 Spitfire this Summer, then you are in for a real treat as she has been purchased by the people of Kent & brought home from service with the South African Air Force & restored to full aerobatic specification. Just listen to the beautiful sound of her double super charged 1.800 HP V12 27 litre Rolls Royce Merlin 60 engine, as she puts on a stunning aerobatic display at the former RAF Battle of Britain fighter station at Manston in Kent. To watch & listen to this beautiful aircraft go to the link below
It is great to see these beautiful aircraft kept in top flying condition & still able to put on a full aerobatic display some 70 years after they first flew back in WW2
